Delivery attempt failed

Jaime Escalante died last week. He was the outstanding algebra teacher portrayed by Edward James Olmos in the movie “Stand and Deliver.”

Ever wonder why you don’t hear about his program anymore, anywhere?

Andrew Klavan provides the answer at his blog, recommending the book, The War Against Hope.

  1. Would also recommend that interested readers check out The Worm in the Apple: How the Teachers Unions Are Destroying American Education by Peter Brimelow, 2004. An older book, it’s also a more thorough discussion of the issues, and I think it may also have better recommendations concerning what might be done to solve the problems in the educational system. I’ve only substitute-taught — just enough to cure me of the idea I’d ever want to do it full-time — but have many teachers among my family and friends who are still fighting this battle. Most of them say that the heart of the mess is a sort of unholy trinity comprised of the teachers unions, administrators and lawyers (representing parents, teachers, administrators and assorted minority groups, as well as those who make up such a large part of our legislative class). Nasty mess.
