That Biblical Writer W.B. Yeats

Eric Metaxas asks, “Does anyone in the media read the Bible anymore?” He was shocked to read The New York Times attribute “Be not inhospitable to strangers, lest they be angels in disguise,” to the poet Yeats.

  1. As a writer who also teaches, I’m often brought up short by the realization that I can’t assume any more that there’s any “common fund” of cultural references. It’s reached the point that most of my students not only haven’t read any book of faith–most of them, now, haven’t even seen The Wizard of Oz!

  2. And then there are the students who will argue with a teacher about a point from Exodus which was actually in the movie “The 10 Commandments.”
