  1. I agree with him about Much Ado About Nothing… I LOVE that movie. I just wish I could edit out about 10 seconds.

I notice Mel’s Hamlet didn’t make the list.

And I have to admit, my other favorite Shakespeare adaptation -which I won’t watch anymore due to all the profanity – is 10 Things I Hate About You. Oh how I loved that movie!

  2. I didn’t think Gibson’s Hamlet was that good. It was an abridgement too far. Hamlet is fast moving and strong without abridgement. I need to see more of Sh. plays.

  3. It’s been so long since I saw that movie… I’m sure you’re right. The main thing I remember is that Helena Bonham Carter was marvelous, of course, as Ophelia.

  4. My favorite, the Ian McKellan version of “Richard III”, is missing. And has no one ever made a good film of “The Tempest”? Because I would love to see that.

  5. Shakespeare movies that every scholar must see:

Scotland, PA — set in the nineteen-seventies, good cast, and almost Macbeth verbatim.

Brannaugh’s Henry V is epic (meaning grandiose, swell, all those good adjectives).

Roman Polanski’s Macbeth is beautiful. Absolutely gorgeous.

Elizabeth Taylor and one of her husbands, I think Richard Burton, in The Taming of the Shrew is good. Man, the ending of that play is always painful to me.

    Go rent these.

    DeEee.
