If I Were a Church Father

You’re Origen!

You do nothing by half-measures. If you’re going to read the Bible, you want to read it in the original languages. If you’re going to teach, you’re going to reach as many souls as possible, through a proliferation of lectures and books. If you’re a guy and you’re going to fight for purity … well, you’d better hide the kitchen shears.

Find out which Church Father you are at The Way of the Fathers!

I can’t say I’m too familiar with Origen, but I know I don’t have what it takes to be a church father anyway. Like they said of Luther, he didn’t just roll out of bed to lead the Reformation; he studied and taught constantly. The closest I’ve gotten to “original languages” is Middle English.

  1. I’ll take the test, but I hope I don’t get Origen. Origen is a highly respected church father who has never been canonized. This is because, in spite of his great scholarship and devotion, he was… intemperate. He is believed to have emasculated himself in order to avoid sexual temptation, an act the Church condemned. He also leaned toward some form of universalism.

    Others will know more.

  2. Origen was excommunicated two or three centuries after his death because of some heresies he apparently promoted (I doubt the excommunication had much effect upon his actual eternal location at that point), but judging from the quotations by him in the Ancient Christian Commentary On Scripture, most things he said were OK.

    I also was Justin Martyr.

  3. In a retrial, I got St. Melito of Sardis. That looks much better. I wonder what pushed my answers to Origen in the first place.
