I agree, you’ve got to have Patrick O’Brian. And I have to admit, She and its sequels never grabbed me. But King Solomon’s Mines is well worth your time.

Never read She, but agree about King Solomon’s Mines. (The drivel-infested League of Extrordinary Gentlemen notwithstanding, I think a young Sean Connery would have done a great job as Quartermain in a film version of KSM. I saw the Deborah Kerr/Stewart Granger version some years ago, but don’t recall much about it, other than the gravity-defying hairdos of Umbopa and Twala.)
