I’ve never understood why this film didn’t have wider distribution.

No, I guess it just didn’t light the right fires. It is a hard movie with a very Christian theme. Seeing this trailer starting me crying a bit.
This was a very very moving movie for me! The Christian message was super for a “mainstream” movie. Sutherland did well.
My Japanese wife was also moved and was pretty shocked by what part of this movie depicted. They are taught that Japan didn’t really do such terrible things to prisoners… or at least not any worse than the Allies did to Japanese POWs.
Everyone should watch this movie.
