How Old Are Your Encyclopedias?

A set of Encyclopaedia Britannica from 1797 has been found in Essex, England, making it the oldest privately owned set known to exist. The family bought it for £15 several years ago.

“We had no idea that they were particularly rare or unusual but we’ve always loved them for their interesting contents and wonderful smell,” the owner said.

  1. I love old encyclopedias. My oldest is a 1909 Encyclopedia Britannica. I also have 1937 & 1964 World Books and a few other sets from the 1940’s and 50’s.

  2. While cleaning out an old house in Havre,Montana in June 2010. I found a set of 1797 encyclopedia Britannica with a 2 volume suppliment from 1802 or 1803. I am missing the 1st book in the 1797 set. 19 books in all. Would like to find a copy of that book.
