Arts and Faith Forum has a list of 100 “Spiritually Significant Films” and you are invited to make nominations. Look at the list and maybe you’ll want to register with the forum to make a nomination for another one. I don’t know if ranking is up for revision. Most of these appear to be foreign films, so you may not have seen many of them. I have seen “Babette’s Feast,” which was slow, quiet, and a pretty good story. “The Mission” was similar that way with beautiful music to boot. Have you seen any of these films? Do you think there’s another one to add to the list?
“Jesus of Montreal” is an odd film with some great–and even spectacular–moments. Also mostly in French.
Basically an acting troupe gets assigned to an old Passion play–in the course of acting the “Jesus” character decides to put the teachings of Christ into practice as actors and people. Though as much a critique
The contemporary equivalent to the temple moneychangers scene would be brilliant and perfect, if it weren’t for less than one second of nudity that entirely sacrifices the movie’s moral high ground. Entirely. Never have so few frames done so much to undercut such a fascinating perspective.
Also, the “resurrection” of the protagonist at the end of the film is one of the most awkwardly forced and forgettable tacked-on endings.
On the bright side, there is one scene where they satirically “act out” the Passion in many different styles that is hillarious for any fan of cinema. Though it also has plenty of cursing as associated with some of the styles.
