Do you really think he’s a bad writer? I just thought he wrote things I didn’t care to read.
He wrote Shawshank Redemption. That should count for something.
No, he’s not a bad writer, but he’s fallen victim to the no-one-can-edit-me phenomenon. You see it when authors get successful: Word counts balloon, tertiary characters pop up left and right, secondary plots grow like weeds. Their output gets sloppy. It’s the same problem Meyer faces. (Her final book, Breaking Dawn, could have been half its length with no loss.) Hence my ill-put pot/kettle comment. Still, when it comes to King I wish we had more of The Shining and less of Dreamcatcher.
