The Way You Talk to People

Hugh suggests, “If you talked to people the way advertising talked to people, they’d punch you in the face.”

Hugh Macleod has a new book on creativity called, Ignore Everybody. Roy Jacobsen appears to recommend it. Is that right, Roy?

  1. Yes, with a caveat: Hugh employs some earthy language in his cartoons and writing. We’re talking short, Anglo-Saxon words that are frowned upon in many circles.

But he does have some good insights on living the creative life. To wit:

    3. Put the hours in.

Doing anything worthwhile takes forever. Ninety percent of what separates successful people and failed people is time, effort, and stamina.

    13. If you accept the pain, it cannot hurt you.

The pain of making the necessary sacrifices always hurts more than you think it’s going to. I know. It sucks. That being said, doing something seriously creative is one of the most amazing experiences one can have, in this or any other lifetime. If you can pull it off, it’s worth it. Even if you don’t end up pulling it off, you’ll learn many incredible, magical, valuable things. It’s not doing it–when you know full well you had the opportunity–that hurts far more than any failure.

  2. So how can I tell whether Hugh represents real wisdom or whether this is the latest, greatest marketing fad. Is this stuff worth my time and money?

  3. That would be up to you, Matt. You could read through Hugh’s blog or you could find the book in a store and scan it. Having the book in hand would help the most, I think.
