Do you remember that bit of news on publishers seeking out fan-fic writers and a particular trilogy based on Pride and Prejudice? Will Duquette has read the first in that trilogy, An Assembly Such As This by Pamela Aidan. He says it isn’t all that bad. “Aidan’s Darcy is nevertheless an intriguing character, consistent with Austen’s Darcy.”
Speaking of fan-fic, November is National Novel Writing Month. I want to type out some fiction this month as well, not for a novel, but for sketches and stories. I may shove some of it to the blog so you have the “opportunity” to read or ignore it.
My dog in the fight:I not only have read Assembly, as it was being written and posted online, I know Ms Aidan personally. Along with another fanfic writer, we used to IM with Pamela T as she was known online, and work through plot difficulties in all the Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman works.
I laugh at my own pride in the whole matter and feel a bit silly at glorying second hand.
The second of the series, “Duty and Desire” just came out last month, and the third, “These Three Remain” is coming out in the spring.
Bottom line: If you like a well-written historical, they are good reads.
I confess. I’m sold. I’ll have to ask my sweet wife about it.
I’ve read the first two. I liked the first one better than the second, which seemed to me a bit too melodramatic, but on the whole, they do a nice job of rounding out the personality of Mr. Darcy, and exploring the enigma of the changes he undergoes.
