“Anything worth doing is worth doing badly”

G K Chesterton

The American Chesterton Society is an organization devoted (obviously) to promoting the writings and ideas of G. K. Chesterton, one of the most brilliant, entertaining, and provocative writers of the 20th Century. Their web site is here.

My first speaking engagement as a published writer came on the invitation of the Chesterton Society of Fargo, North Dakota, several years back. This was before I discovered PowerPoint, so they had to look at me for the entire length of the presentation, a considerable trial. But I thought it went well, and it’s a good memory.

I’m scheduled to speak to them again on Saturday, October 24. The meeting will be in the Willows Room of the Passages Cafe in the Radisson Hotel in Fargo (2nd floor) at 201 5th St. N. The public is welcome to attend at no charge, unless you want some breakfast. I’ll have books for sale.

I realize that few of our readers live in the Fargo area, but few of you live in any one place. You’re pretty spread out, according to our blog stats.

I’ve been meaning to talk to you about your organizational skills.

  1. You didn’t tell folks what you’ll be speaking about Lars.

    – by the way; if anyone wants a great introduction to Chesterton, Dale Ahlquist has a book out called Common Sense 101; lessons from G.K. Chesterton. (The cover has a wonderful photo of him and his wife.)

  2. That’s cool. The American Chesterton Society has a great tv program on EWTN, which is pretty much the only thing I watch on the tube anymore.

  3. I’ve been thinking I could ignore it away…

I’ve been trying to come up with a way to wish it away…

I’ve been thinking, well things could be worse…and then I saw this photo Lars included in his post of G.K. Chesterton. I knew then it was too late.

Except for the cigar and hair, I kinda look like this guy!

On top of that, a wood-working magazine I get hints from each week, sent me an e-card, wishing me a happy 60th.

Yesterday, I discovered that that guy in church who has a fantastic marriage counseling ministry, who’s saved over half the marriages in our church, is having serious marriage problems.

That very same day, the kid who mows my tiny, little lawn demanded a $1.25 raise!

Now, today, I went to a popular general store that sells everything from China…. and purchased a bottle of cough syrup for my wife.

The check-out girl said, “Oh, my, yes, my grandfather like this stuff too…”

I’ve missed Sunday school. Perhaps I really should get on to Church for the service.

  4. Nah, Mum and I were the exceptions to the rule.

I quit smoking and gained like there was no tomorrow.!!!!

Almost makes want to start smoking again.

If you attended the Walker reunion this past year, you would have seen my thin brother and cousin. Boy, THEY got all the breaks and on top of it, Mum like them best!!!

  5. A better introduction to Chesterton might be his early collection called ‘The Defendant’. (It has a great introduction that’s classic Chesterton.)

    – In these essays he defends the common man, common things, and common sense; and that’s Chesterton in a nutshell.

    – You can get the book free at Manybooks.net (The website allows you to customize your downloads, so if you haven’t tried it I recommend the site highly.)
