Alan Garner says somewhere that myths have been passed down through the generations till they are “almost pure energy.” I think you could apply that to fairy tales, too — meaning that these are powerful works of the imagination that children should get to experience without the characteristic smarty-pantsedness of our time intervening (as in Sesame Street versions, etc.). We found at this household that our children enjoyed retellings of the stories of a winter’s evening (or readings with one candle).
