Would also recommend that interested readers check out The Worm in the Apple: How the Teachers Unions Are Destroying American Education by Peter Brimelow, 2004. An older book, it’s also a more thorough discussion of the issues, and I think it may also have better recommendations concerning what might be done to solve the problems in the educational system. I’ve only substitute-taught — just enough to cure me of the idea I’d ever want to do it full-time — but have many teachers among my family and friends who are still fighting this battle. Most of them say that the heart of the mess is a sort of unholy trinity comprised of the teachers unions, administrators and lawyers (representing parents, teachers, administrators and assorted minority groups, as well as those who make up such a large part of our legislative class). Nasty mess.
