In this interview from a few years ago, author Jasper Fforde, who has a new novel coming next year, talks about writing for the fun of it, even when no one reads or comments on anything you’ve sent them.
Of course, one always thinks ‘wouldn’t it be great to be published?’ But I was always thinking ‘oh, it’d be great to be published but it’s not likely, but I’m having fun, so I’m going to write what I want to write.’ So when I did actually speak to people about my project, they thought it was a pile of rubbish.
I love Fforde’s books: I have never laughed out loud so much in a bookstore as I did when reading Well of Lost Plots. I bought the book that day and left the bookstore quickly, so as to avoid disturbing other patrons with my unbridled mirth. But seriously, that scene with the verbivores being driven off with the singing of “Jerusalem”? Brilliant!
I have a copy of Thursday Next, but have yet to get to it–like most of my books. The Very Right Reverend Will Duquette encouraged me to consider Fforde’s silliness.
My regional library system has Something Rotten on tape. I requested it so I can listen as I drive around.
Thanks for the recommendation.
