Sorry for the Outage

Sorry for the blog outage yesterday. The ever-conspiring Manx (not Manites–don’t click that link) succeeded in getting around our defenses and taking us down. We will work ever-harder to keep that from happening again. Aside from that, do you have any issues using this blog, any performance issues, I mean? Feel free to use this space to tell us about it.

(BTW, outage is one of those ugly words that looks like contemporary terminology to me, but it’s actually over 100 years old.)

  1. My only comment is that it’s cruel to taunt us with tidbits about the Manites and even provide a link, only to warn us not to click it! When I “Bing” manites, all I get is manatees. What have you got against the poor manatees?

  2. Nothing. I sloppily referred to the inhabitants of the Isle of Man, who are evil conspirators of world domination. Everyone knows that.

    Sorry for the error.

  3. When I saw that the substitute page was from Yahoo Hosting Services I guessed that it was either a hosting issue or a Domain Registration issue. That was confirmed when I ran a Whois on brandywinebooks.net to see if the registered owner had changed and it stated that your domain registration had been renewed four seconds earlier. That led me to surmise that either you were late in paying your bill or there was a lag between your hosting company suspending service for an expired account and the registration company notifying them that it had been renewed. Perhaps they are in different time zones.

  4. Very good, Sherlock, but the truth is I failed to give my new registrar all of the proper information upfront. I thought all of the domain info would just transfer, but no, only part of it transfers, and I should have provided the rest of it manually.

Which is yet another reason I will never work for the FBI.
