10 Sci-Fi/Fantasy Shows That Were Canceled Too Soon: from Paste Magazine

You know, I watched the pilot of Firefly and liked it, but somehow didn’t like it enough. I think it was the sexual content. My sweet, sweet wife said my expectations were too high, having heard so much praise over the years, but I’m not sure that’s the reason.

  1. There’s a lot to like in Firefly, but it was the violence and suspense that did it for me. I am just not up for that kind of emotional wringer. Even the episode with Kaylee and the ball was hard, because I was stressing out over her social faux pas the whole time! However, I also don’t watch war movies, so take that as you will.

But it deserved a better ending than _Serenity._ I wanted more closure to the Mal-Inara situation.

  2. The only episode of Firefly I ever watched was one where the crew encountered a bunch of murderous religious fanatics who all talked like backwoods fundamentalists. Pass.

  3. Defying Gravity. Short-lived sci-fi series. Set about 50 years in the future. A NASA-esque space agency sends a crew of 7 on a multi-year multi-planet expedition. It ended mid-season, after a two-part episode about the first landing on Venus. Very well done.

  4. Loren–you did see the worst episode, by far.

Phil–if you saw the actual pilot (the one starting with a flashback of the civil war), then I think you’ve given the show a fair shake. Sure, there’s less sex in most episodes, but I feel that either the characters, situations, jokes and storytelling in that episode will grab you, or nothing will.
