I’ve always thought that line was stuck in to fit the song’s rhyme scheme, as (other than A Christmas Carol) nothing seems less Christmas-y than a ghost story.
Yes, there’s that one, but I think some cultures have a tradition of telling stories at Christmas in the same way we think of telling stories around a fire. In Ireland, they tell stories all the time, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the song was referring to a tradition like theirs.
