Women Wait Longer for Coffee–Maybe

Research on eight Boston coffee shops indicates female customers wait as much as 20 seconds longer than male customers for their coffee. Maybe the researchers should look outside Boston. Eight stores? Is that really enough of a sample for this conclusion?

  1. If this really is discrimination, rather than holding someone back for a lifetime, it’s down to 20 seconds. This just proves even bigots are in a hurry these days.

  2. They tried to eliminate flirting and frou-frou drinks as reasons for the delay. However, I would think that socializing might play a factor. Men recognize that ordering coffee is a business transaction. They simply order their coffee and stick their nose back into their newspaper in order to occupy their brain with objective information while they wait. That allows the Barista to process the order post-haste.

On the other hand, a woman sees ordering coffee as a social event. Her order will be buried somewhere in the middle of a running commentary on the weather, decor, current fashion trends, the family status of all current employees and neighbors, relatives, etc. By the time the Barasta can focus on processing the transaction and preparing the beverage, their kids will have grown one or two shoe sizes.
