Grace is a free gift – how could anything be cheaper than that?
To assume that “free” is the same as “cheap” is the classic misunderstanding. One might as well say that “free speech” is necessarily the same as “cheap speech.” It could be, but it could also be very costly indeed. The classic exposition on the subject is Bonhoeffer’s The Cost of Discipleship.
As an addendum, Bonhoeffer paid very highly for grace in his own life.
