Here’s a winter’s blast from my childhood. This original clip comes from a retrospective (done some years ago now) about the old “Lunch with Casey” kids’ show, which ran on Channel 11 here in the Twin Cities. The late Roger Awsumb (the name’s right; not sure of the spelling) played Casey Jones the railroad engineer. But for this spot, he donned a union suit and lip-synched a song from one of our indigenous Scandinavian-dialect parodists. I’m pretty sure it was either Yogi Yorgeson or Stan Boreson.
You may be surprised (or not) to learn that there was some controversy about this very popular bit. A number of older people complained that underwear humor was unsuited to children’s entertainment.
It was a more innocent time…
Wish YouTube had a clip of the fractured “A Night Before Christmas” from the “Axel and His Dog” show. I may post the text here this week, anyway.
Oh, that ending! 😉 What a hoot!
Are you feeling better, Mr. Walker? Antibiotics doin’ their trick?
I’m not really seeing any improvement. Which may mean I’ll have to see the doctor again for stronger antibiotics, or amputation or something.
I’m sorry to hear that. But you know, bronchitis is stubborn so maybe the antibiotics just need a few more days to get the upper hand. Amputation *does* seem severe. Hope it won’t come to that.
I’m just sure…somewhere, somehow…there is forgiveness for showing us that red, long underwear song……….
In spite of that…….. I do pray for your speedier recovery from what ails you… whatever it is…….bronchitis? Or is there a fungus among us?
Remember, Lars, you must be 100% by Christmas!
Percentages are relative. That song was hilarious and awful, but not nearly as bad as a comical prostate commercial I saw this week and will not be posting a link to.
I, too, remember seeing this as a kid. We always watched Casey and his sidekick, Roundhouse Rodney. I remember what a thrill it was to see Rodney make a live appearance at the Red Owl grocery store in Phalen Center in St. Paul. Talk about making a kid’s day.
John, fortunately my family is gathering on New Year’s Day. So I have a little extra time to heal up from my bronchitis (and shop the post-Christmas sales!).
Phil, imho this bit beats “Mr. Snow Miser” all hollow.
Ha! You can think that, but which one do they play on the Tee-vee every year or so? It ain’t Captain Undervear up there.
It’s not Yogi Yorgerson. It’s probably Stan Boreson, but it doesn’t sound quite like him, either. Here’s Mr. Boreson doing it on Lawrence Welk, 1957.
Phil: You have proved my point.
David: Thanks for the info.
