A Rumor flies like an arrow (or maybe more like a shotgun or cluster bomb) and cannot be restrained.
Years ago I heard the story of a pastor whose parishioner had come to him confessing and asking forgiveness for gossiping about him. He responded by taking her outside on a windy, blustery day and breaking open a feather pillow so that the wind scattered the contents around the neighborhood. He told her that when she was able to gather again all the scattered feathers, she would be able to make right again the damage she had done to his reputation and her church.
