I can’t say I fully understand this point of view, but it does seem respectable. Ron Hogan talks about making money from your book reviews and promotions in light of the paid promotions done through the #FridayReads hashtag on Twitter. I suppose it’s all about the appearance of promoting something because a publisher asked you to, not because you actually like it, but if a publisher asks you to potentially promote something you would likely not have discovered on your own and that you do, in fact, like, the problem seems only one of appearance.
Maybe I’m just not a member of the anti-commercial club.
I don’t think you CAN authentically be a member of the anti-commercial club unless you’re willing to go completely off the grid. Although you can be against *excess* commercialism, or *exploitaitive* commercialism. Which I’ve tried to be, and I’m going to keep trying…
There seems to be this kneejerk reaction among a certain crowd that taking money to promote something eradicates any sincere appreciation you might have had for it. I don’t think that’s the case. Sounds like we’re on the same page!
Yes, I’d say we are. Thanks for stopping by.
I recently noted an interesting observation that, while the occupy movement is against capitalism, none of their tents were homemade. So, not even the occupy crowd is totally consistent.
Thanks to Mr. Magundi Speaks His Mind which I learned of from Dr. Boli’s blog, which I first read about on these pages a few years back.
