In case you missed this on other news outlets earlier, the U.S. Attorney General, Eric Holder, argues that torture is not torture unless the perpetrator intends to torture. A specific action, though harsh or intense, is not torture when done for training or without the intent to do lasting harm. The “knowledge that severe pain and suffering may result” from an action or situation is not enough to prove those with that knowledge intended to “inflict severe pain and suffering.”
Here’s another glorious reason we should take the circus out of politics so that idiots will have far less opportunity to rule the country.
I assume that Liberty University has a covenant or agreement all students must sign which would guard against them taking up certain unbiblical causes in student groups, but a Democratic Party club doesn’t strike me as one of them, so I can’t say I agree with Liberty’s administrators in shutting down the college democrats. Far better to engage the policies of the DNC in open debate and healthy discussion than to shut them down and make those who favor DNC ideas hold their tongues.
What is culture? Is there a difference between people and culture? If someone argues that Jesus calls to redeem people but not culture, are they really saying anything, or is the difference inconsequential?
It seems to me people make up culture; to reach people would be to reach their culture, and you can’t reach a culture as such because it’s a concept, a description. You reach people who think and act in patterns we describe as cultures, and if we apply the gospel to the making of art or business, then we are reaching people within their cultural context.
This will be completely incoherent, but I’ll go ahead and empty my brain into the word processor, and call it a post. I won’t be doing one tomorrow. I’m on my way to Elk Horn, Iowa for Tivoli Fest. Reports and photos will be forthcoming once I’m back. If I get back, of course. You never know with us old guys, especially when we play with swords.
So I’ve got to pack for the trip, as soon as my washing is done. I’ve also got to celebrate my weekly bill-paying ceremony. And load Mrs. Hermanson. And write a list of eight suggested questions for TV and radio interviewers, for my publisher’s publicist. Continue reading Incoherence on the eve of departure→
Procter & Gamble must pay a particular snack food tax in the UK, because it failed to make its case that Pringles is not, in fact, a potato chip. The company said that because Pringles have only 42% potato in them (the rest being flour and fat), they are more like a cake or biscuit and therefore not subject to the tax in question.
I wonder if P&G would have won their case if they had employed a five-year-old to argue it.
How can someone who has the answers for everyone one moment, have no answers for themselves the next? Why are we, after all that confident talk of “new life,” “new creation,” “the power of God,” “healing,” “wisdom,” “miracles,” “the power of prayer,” …why are we so weak? Why do so many “good Christian people,” turn out to be just like everyone else? Divorced. Depressed. Broken. Messed up. Full of pain and secrets. Addicted, needy and phony. I thought we were different.
…
You people with your Bibles. Look something up for me? Isn’t almost everyone in that book screwed up? I mean, don’t the screwed up people- like Abraham, Jacob, Moses, David, Hosea- outnumber the “good Christians” by about ten to one?
